According to an OIE Platform report, stray dogs in Serbia are an increasing issue, with their numbers contuing to rise each year. The report indicates that the “Republic of Serbia has no strategy for solving this problem at the national level.”

With so many stray dogs, the European Society of Dog and Animal Welfare claims that the animals are often subjected to cruel treatment, including organized dogfighting and torture for sport. They said, “In the Republic of Serbia, dogs and cats experience inhumane capture and death in a never ending attempt by authorities to control the stray animal populations of towns and cities.”

According to the ESDAW, even children get in on the cruelty to stray dogs in Serbia, with local non-profit Humanimal Balkins saying that many Serbians view the stray dogs as little more than vermin.

In a country riddled with a disdain for street dogs, it’s incredibly refreshing to see a young boy with a heart for animals.
