A 2-year-old golden retriever named Wally was enjoying a swim in his favorite lake when a woodchuck popped out of the water and climbed on his back.
Wally is your typical golden retriever who loves everyone he meets, including other animals. His favorite activity is swimming in Hickory Hills Lake near his home in Lunenburg, MA.

Russell told WCVB-TV, “He was about 100 meters out and a woodchuck, I think, just crawled right up on his back and he swam back to shore with him.”
Wally turned around to see what was on his back but appeared unfazed by his passenger. He continued to make his way back to shore with the woodchuck in tow.
Once the new friends reached the shore they touched noses and parted ways.
Thankfully, Russell and her husband caught the entire incident on video. She said, “We were flabbergasted. It was unbelievable. We couldn’t believe what we were seeing.”
She also wondered if the woodchuck was “in distress or just lazy”.
Wally is such a good boy and as his mom said, “it doesn’t get better than Wally”.
The video has gone viral with over 40K views. Some people think it wasn’t a woodchuck but a young beaver. “Look at its tail.”
Another proud parent of a golden wrote, “Looks just like my golden boy LJ! Can’t go wrong with a golden retriever. They are truly the best breed of dog!”
