My childhood home was built on old farming land where oranges and avocados were grown in Orange County before it got really developed as a suburb.
Given its location, my parents have quite a few orange and avocado trees on their property which meant that we never had to buy either avocados or oranges – something I sorely miss whenever I head to the grocery store these days.
But it wasn’t just my family that enjoyed the avocado and orange trees on our property. Each year we’d have several mockingbird families build their nests in the trees. This meant that each spring, we’d find ourselves rescuing at least one baby bird that fell out of its nest.
That is the risk that comes with living inside a tree. Sometimes, little baby animals end up falling out of the tree. For the most part, their moms come to the rescue, but sometimes, they don’t.
That seemed to be the case with a little baby squirrel named Bunk. The tiny squirrel was found by Patty Robinson, who took him in when she found him orphaned. As GeoBeats Animals/a> reported, Robinson first took Bunk in with the intention of raising him to eventually be set free back into the wild.
However, that didn’t seem to be the plan in the end, as the little squirrel had no intention of ever returning to the wild. Bunk seemed to want to stay with Robinson.
As Robinson explained to GeoBeats Animals, “I had every intention of letting him go free…I tried three more times to let him go and he wouldn’t leave…”
Rather than just leaving him to figure it out on his own in the wild when he wouldn’t leave, Robinson decided to accommodate Bunk.
She allowed him to live his life as an indoor squirrel, but she made sure to make it as special as possible for him. That is when she constructed the lucky little Bunk an extravagant indoor treehouse so that he could run and climb to his heart’s content.
As Robinson added, “Being an artist and a builder, I said all right if you can’t be in the trees I’m going to make him a tree. I built him a treehouse all interlocked with his favorite kinds of wood. He’s got the biggest room in the house, eight sliding glass windows, and cathedral ceilings. He can run around the entire room without touching the floor safely because he’s on all his little ramps.”
