A dog owner was left embarrassed beyond belief after she mistakingly left her dog at an accounting office, believing it to be a doggy daycare.
The mistake went on for weeks until the owner finally realized that the “doggy daycare” she’d been taking her pup to wasn’t actually a doggy daycare at all.
The mixup was explained on Reddit by u/SwarmTendon, who worked at the office.
They wrote:
“A while back I was working in an office that allowed dogs. It was an open floor plan and since customers never came into the office, we kept the dogs food and water bowls right by the front door just because it was the most convenient space and no one else would see them but us who worked there.”
They went to say, “One day a very frantic woman came in and she had an absolutely massive basset hound with her. Usually the only people who came into the office were associates who had appointments with someone working there, but it was rare they brought their dogs.”
It seems the woman had a mixup, and since there was a doggy daycare “across the way,” it’s easy to understand why.
The Reddit post went on, saying:
“She ran up to me and said, ‘Do you work here?’ And I said ‘Yes, how can I help you?’ And she said ‘I wasn’t sure if you took walk ins but I read online I could just drop him off? I tried to call but no answer.’
I didn’t know what she was talking about at that point and I said ‘Come again? Who did you call exactly?’ Thinking if I could just saddle her off to whoever she came to see, I wouldn’t have to decipher her problem.
She said ‘Well it doesn’t matter now. Look, something urgent’s come up and I really need to leave him here. Here’s his food he likes and I’ll be back in a few hours and—’ at this point I wasn’t thinking of the doggie daycare. I thought maybe she was a friend of someone here.”
U/SwarmTendo ended up taking the dog into the office, confused but going with the flow. The woman “left almost immediately” and Otis was stuck in accounting.
When the woman returned to pick up her dog, the office employee didn’t explain the mixup. Instead, they just went with it and asked for $20 for watching Otis. They thought it would all be done then and there, but the next week, the woman returned with Otis again!
Everyone at the office fell in love with Otis, and Otis’ owner was thrilled with the rates and one-on-one attention her pup received during the day. But after weeks passed, something clicked for the woman and she realized her embarrassing mistake.
The Reddit post explained that Otis’ owner came in one day and said, “‘This isn’t a dog daycare at all. This is just an office, isn’t it?’ She said it with a note of surprise, as though she was looking around and putting it all together for the first time (no coincidence that this was the first time she wasn’t in some crazy rush either.) She was like ‘Then who are all these other dogs?!’ And I explained.”
While some dog owners might’ve been horrified that the mistake wasn’t corrected sooner, Otis’ mom was happy with the care her dog had been receiving, though she was incredibly embarrassed.
In the end, the woman continued to bring Otis to the office until she moved away around two years later. In the comments, U/SwarmTendo said that they had a “retirement party” for Otis before he left and he was dearly missed.
It started as an earnest mistake but turned into so much more and that’s a beautiful thing.
