When Erin Amadon got a call from a neighbor to come see their new ducklings, she didn’t think much of it. Amadon raises ducks so she’s always keen to meet new ducklings in the neighborhood – they’re quite adorable, after all.
However, as Amadon shared with GeoBeats Animals, the duckling visit turned into a rescue mission when one of the tiny ducklings was rejected from her mother.
It all started when Amadon arrived at her neighbor’s house to see the tiny hatchlings. The mother duck was carefully coddling and dotting on her new little babies, but she seemed to be ignoring one in particular.
The little duck being ignored, Bea, had hatched a day later than the rest of the ducklings and the mother duck seemed completely uninterested in her.
Having quite a bit of knowledge of ducks and ducklings, Amadon recognized that tiny Bea wouldn’t survive long if someone didn’t step in to help her. So, she volunteered to take the little duckling home and raise it as her own.
The neighbor happily agreed and Bea soon found herself at Amadon’s home. As Amadon later realized, Bea wasn’t just suffering from being rejected but she also had splayed legs. Splayed legs affect ducks and chickens and cause their legs to splay outward. It can make it really difficult for them to walk or bear weight, but thankfully, there’s an easy fix if the condition is caught early enough and Amadon knew just what to do.
As Amadon worked with Bea to correct her splayed legs and showed her love and support, Bea became inseparable. The tiny duckling followed her around like Amadon was her mother and it was so sweet!
They enjoyed plenty of cuddles and playtime together, and Amadon even took little Bea on a trip to New York!
