It is officially spring and that means foaling season for the wild horses on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
Meet Charlie.
The first foal of the season is a handsome colt with a big white marking (known as a star) on his head. The Corolla Wild Horse Fund (CWHF), a nonprofit organization that oversees the care and protection of the wild horses, shared the good news with their followers on Facebook.
“Welcome to the world, baby number one – a colt we are calling Charlie,” they wrote.
While he is absolutely adorable, visitors and residents are reminded to keep their distance, at least 50 feet, to give the foal and his mother time to bond.
“Please remember to give mares and foals plenty of space. We really cannot stress this enough. It’s imperative that they have time to bond with each other, and stress can cause all kinds of issues with both mom and foal. If you are lucky enough to see them, please be respectful and responsible. Do not stop and get out of your vehicle, do not hover on top of them (50ft applies when you’re inside a vehicle too), and definitely do not approach, touch, or feed,” posted the nonprofit.

People are thrilled with the happy announcement and cannot get enough of the new wild horse addition. One person pointed out the marking on his head looks like a tornado. For his mother’s sake, let’s hope it doesn’t mean he is going to be hard to handle.
The wild horses roam free and are often spotted strolling along the beach or near one of the 700 homes in the area. A woman was shocked when she walked out her front door and saw Charlie with his mom in the early morning hours.
She said, “They were in our yard this morning! Heading out to see the sunrise and opened the door to their sweet family! So dark I could almost not see them, but I managed to get one pic. Best way to start the day! Welcome Charlie!!!!”
You can help preserve the Colonial Spanish Mustangs, also known as “Bankers”, by donating to the Corolla Wild Horse Fund. “Your support helps us continue to protect and responsibly manage the Bankers here in Corolla so that Charlie and all the rest of the foals can grow up happy and healthy, and eventually have offspring of their own,” states CWHF.
Follow CWHF on Facebook to watch Charlie grow and meet all the other new foals of the season.
