If you are somebody who loves buying your mother flowers on Mother’s Day, you might want to keep her beloved feline in mind. After all, you wouldn’t want to get her anything that would hurt her cat.

A good example of how this could happen is if you get your mother flowers and they have lilies in them. Lilies may smell beautiful and they look phenomenal, but to cats, they are toxic.

An urgent warning was issued by Cats Protection, saying that people should avoid purchasing lilies because of the poisonous pollen they contain.

That is echoed by the cat welfare charity, which adds that they are extremely toxic to felines and even if they only brush the flower as they pass by, they could be affected while grooming themselves later.

Supermarkets and other organizations have been contacted by the charity to let them know about the seriousness of the situation. They would like them to pass along the warning to those who may not be aware of what could happen.

According to the Metro, a spokesperson said:

“Lilies are one of the most common forms of poisoning in cats and we can’t emphasize enough just how dangerous they can be. The toxins can cause them to go into kidney failure and this can be fatal.”

There have been those who have had difficulties with this in the past. One cat owner, who lives in London, almost lost his kitten, Luke, when he had pollen on his nose after brushing past the Lily plant. He took the cat to the emergency vet but he was already dehydrated.

According to the Metro, he said, “Thankfully she made a full recovery but I would never have bought the lilies if I’d known how deadly they could be.”

He went on to say how important it is that people be warned not to purchase lilies if they have cats in their homes.

If you have a cat that is exhibiting any symptoms and lilies are to blame, make sure you get them to a veterinarian for treatment immediately.
