A video posted by CBS News shows a hawk perched on the side of a public trash can moments before hopping in to grab something tasty. It soon emerges with a rat in its talons.
The hungry hawk proceeds to eat the rodent, seemingly undeterred by any onlookers.
“In New York City, the rats go viral for eating pizza – and the hawks go viral for eating rats,” the post reads. “Watch this bird shock onlookers in the Upper West Side by descending into a trash can and pulling out a sizable ‘snack.’”
“My Red Shoulder hawks catch rats out of storm drains,” commented Jennifer Waligora Quimby. “They are pretty much on top of the food chain when it comes to birds on the East Coast. Awesome hunters.”
“He even pulled out a napkin,” wrote Jessica Nicole Stallworth Gindratt. “All he needed was a to-go bag!😆”
“He was in there so long trying to decide between the rat or half eaten falafel 🥙,” commented Tracy Flechsig Smith. “Choices, choices! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂”
“Sharks clean our water, I guess the hawks are happy,” wrote Joanne Dono Valentin. “That’s just how nature works.”
“Wow, even grabbed some toilet paper for when the rat comes back out the other end. Incredibly smart bird,” observed Rocky Thao.
“Nature at its finest!” wrote Vanessa Carranza Yeomans. “Let this be a reminder to us to NOT use poisons to deter pests bc those same ‘pests’ are meals for other wildlife.”
“It’s all good till he drops half a rat carcass from the sky onto a pedestrian,” commented Zachary Smith.
“The Circle of Life,” commented Natalie Campbell Porter. “Just doing his job and having a meal, too.”
“Outstanding,” wrote Sharon Mousavi Dormani. “NYC needs more birds of prey.
“I’m grateful the natural pest controllers are returning to our cities and being respected and encouraged,” she added.
