Kanawha-Charleston Humane in West Virginia has an annual holiday tradition that involves filling Christmas stockings for all the good (and mischievous) shelter pets to take home with them when they get adopted.

The stockings are filled with goodies donated by supporters, and then hung on the kennels with care in hopes that an adopter will soon appear.

All the dogs and cats have been on their best behavior and only have one thing on their Christmas list – a forever home.

They have heard tales of warm beds by the fire and cuddling with loving humans and hope to experience it soon.

It has been a rough year for animal shelters so Kanawha-Charleston Humane made sure to go “ALL OUT” with Christmas decorations (all donated) to spread some holiday cheer.

A video posted on the shelter’s TikTok showed the reactions of some of the pets as the stockings were hung. Grab a tissue and watch as a chocolate Labrador named PushPop looks longingly at his stocking. Staff wrote, “PushPop looking like he finally believes in Santa Claus.”

A puppy named Rolls couldn’t resist inspecting the red stocking, while the cats peacefully napped in their kennels.

The goal is to have empty kennels with all the pets opening their stocking with their new families on Christmas morning. However, any dogs or cats still at the shelter will not be alone. They will open their presents with staff on Christmas.

Dogs and cats of all sizes and ages are hoping to have a home for the holidays. Check out all the adoptable animals here.

In case you are wondering which pets made the naughty list, check out the video below with staff sharing who they think is “at the top of Santa’s naughty list”.

Make it the most wonderful time of the year for a shelter pet by adopting or fostering.
