If we go to the ocean, it’s always going to be a good day. We stand with our feet in the water and watch the sunrise or sunset, or perhaps we just marvel at the beauty in front of us. Every day is a good day at the beach, but if we manage to see a dolphin, it is a day worth remembering.

Back in 2018, beachgoers near Monterey, California were treated to a site that very few people have ever seen. It was a “superpod” of hundreds of dolphins that were swimming just off the coast. The onlookers were able to take videos, so all of us get to enjoy that site.

A superpod is not just a large gathering of dolphins, it’s actually something that occurs when smaller social groups of dolphins, known as pods, get together and form a larger pod.

It is more than just a matter of being social, according to NPR, Patrick Webster from the Monterey Bay aquarium said that they chase food together and that there may have been thousands of dolphins in this single superpod.

That aquarium posted a video of the dolphins as they were moving along the coast. They also added music to make it even more amazing.

Most people don’t realize that dolphin superpods are not all that unusual. What is unusual is that this pod managed to stick along the shore for quite some time.

Webster also talked to the Los Angeles Times, saying that it was one of the most amazing experiences he had ever had. He loved the way that they would jump out of the water to check him out.

I just added something new to my bucket list.
