If you live in an area where the temperatures often dip below freezing, you have probably heard your fair share of advice on dealing with the ice.

If you are out on the ice, and you fall through, you likely know the scenario and what to do in order to have the best chance of survival.

Then again, if you are a horse and fall through the ice, you aren’t quite in such a good situation. It’s difficult to reason with a horse, but when we see them in trouble, we want to save them just the same.

I’m sure that’s how the South Kalispell Fire Department felt when they saw four horses who had fallen through the ice near Patrick Creek in Montana. They shared on Facebook that those horses were stuck in the water, up to their necks in the freezing cold and they were panicking.

As you can see in the video below, there were plenty of humans on hand to do what they could to help. They tried to pull the horses from the water but their attempts fell short.

The dozen or so people on site tried to use brute strength to pull the horses out of the water but there was fear of them breaking their legs. They also tried to set up a makeshift ramp, but the horses could not be coaxed up onto it.

Finally, they used a long rope to tie around the horses and a tractor to pull the horses to safety. It was a success and after the horses were released from the water, they were taken to a veterinary office where they could get the care they needed.
