It was just before Christmas time and David and Sumey Hageman were settling into their new home with their new baby. It looked like it was going to be a great Christmas until tragedy struck.
According to the Miami Herald, the couple’s 4-year-old Dachshund, Lola, became slipped a disc in her spine and became injured.
Because of the injury, Lola’s back legs were paralyzed and she needed emergency surgery if she was ever going to walk again.
David and Sumey wanted Lola’s spine to be fixed, but they couldn’t afford the $6000 surgery. Not knowing what else to do, they made the heartbreaking decision to surrender Lola to a rescue that would pay for her surgery and adopt her out to a new family.
Understandably, it was an incredibly hard decision but the couple couldn’t make the money appear from thin air and knew what they had to do.
As the Miami Herald reported, the rescue ended up taking Lola in and getting her care with the Southeast Veterinary Neurology in Miami, Florida. Their veterinary neurologist Dr. Michael Wong was the one to perform Lola’s surgery and as he did, he learned about her story.
With Christmas coming up, Dr. Wong decided to give the Hagemans a beautiful Christmas present: their dog back.
Dr. Wong performed the surgery on Lola so she could walk again, but before giving her back to the rescue he let them know he was waiving his fees and the surgery was free. All he asked was that the rescue return the dog to her original family.
Watching Lola reunite with Sumey and David was payment enough! Sumey was moved to tears. It was truly the best Christmas present ever.
