Volunteers drove 3,000 miles to rescue 16 dogs in Texas after the winter storm devastated the state.
As if the pandemic weren’t enough, Texas has been hit incredibly hard by a historic winter storm that caused extended power outages. People were left without heat, power, or water for days in freezing temperatures, and humans weren’t the only ones to suffer.
As what happens in any natural disaster, many animals were suffering because of the storm. Animals were cold, hungry, tired, and in need of care. Many animals also became displaced due to infrastructure failures, like bursting pipes and caving ceilings. As temperatures begin to warm, the state is still facing the repercussions of the storm, so volunteers from around the country are stepping in to help.
The two volunteers fromNo Dog Left Behind in Pittsburg took a 4-day road trip to pick up 16 dogs at two different Texas-based shelters.

Dave Stash and Walt Schwarz left for Texas from Pittsburg on February 26. They took a van and headed to Houston where they picked up the 16 dogs in need.
From there, they drove directly to Atlanta, Georgia where they were able to deliver the dogs to the safety of a shelter, thanks to Best Friends Animal Society.
That animal welfare organization reached out to 150 shelters across Texas to find out what dogs needed to be transferred out of the area, to allow room for dogs displaced by the storm to receive care.
After locating 16 dogs that needed to be transferred, they were able to coordinate with the shelter in Atlanta to take the dogs, and worked with No Dog Left Behind to arrange the transportation of the pups.
“Just those two alone, just stopping everything. It just lets us know that the Pittsburgh people and the volunteers … if there is somebody in need, an animal in need, it doesn’t matter what they are doing, they are there,” said Tiffany Decosmo, the operations manager at No Dog Left Behind, to WPXI.
