When at least 30 tornados tore through the midwestern U.S. in December, six states were devasted by the deadly winter storms. The carnage was especially grave in Kentucky, where the vast trail of devastation led Kentucky’s governor to describe Dec. 10-11 as “one of the darkest days in the state’s history.”
Now Greater Good Charities–which provided food, medicine, and other emergency relief to help tornado victims in the wake of the disaster–is back in Mayfield, Kentucky, to rebuild an animal shelter damaged by the storm.
This isn’t the first time we’ve visited Mayfield-Graves County Animal Shelter, which played a leading role in caring for displaced animals after tornados flattened this town. Once the danger passed, Greater Good Charities provided the shelter with pet food, medicine, emergency supplies, and even helped evacuate shelter pets to make room for more vulnerable animals.
“These pets were in the shelter before the storms hit, and by clearing them out we are making room for incoming displaced pets,” Greater Good Charities wrote on Facebook at the time.
Now two months after tornados nearly wiped Mayfield off the map, Greater Good Charities is back to help the Kentucky shelter rebuild after the devasting storm.
“Greater Good Charities’ Rescue Rebuild team is on-site at Mayfield-Graves County Animal Shelter in Mayfield, Kentucky, to repair damage from December’s tornadoes,” Greater Good Charities posted on Facebook.
Though the shelter itself narrowly escaped a direct hit, the sprawling fence surrounding the property wasn’t as lucky.
Fortunately for Mayfield-Graves County Animal Shelter—-as well as the 2,500 shelter pets who pass through its doors each year—-our donors, partners, and volunteers have stepped up to help us repair this critical enclosure.
“With help from a generous grant from the IDEXX Foundation, we’ll be repairing the 250 foot outside fencing, which was damaged during the disaster,” wrote Greater Good Charities, which is also funding these shelter repairs using money raised by the Animal Rescue Site.
This critical project also wouldn’t be possible without the support of Animal Rescue Site readers, who selflessly donated thousands of dollars to help animals impacted by the tornados.
