There is nothing quite like having a dog by your side. It doesn’t matter whether you’re relaxing on the sofa or going for a walk around the block, they are willing participants and want nothing more than to be closer to you.

Of course, we all love dogs for different reasons. Some of us appreciate the fact that they are loving and others appreciate the fact that they can care for us when we are down.

Sometimes, dogs may even get the opportunity to save our lives, and when they do that, they deserve special recognition.

Such is the case with a little Jack Russell Terrier who saved his owner with some amazing “ninja moves.” According to USA Today, it seems as if a black bear had come out and threatened Susan Lee, but the Jack Russell Terrier was not phased and stood up to the bear in a very brave way.

It all took place in Stafford, Vermont when 61-year-old Susan Lee was out walking on her property. She has some nice trails that she enjoys walking on and she had her two dogs with her. One of those dogs was a Labradoodle, but it was the Jack Russell Terrier that really caught our attention.

After the dogs had wandered away, she called them back and heard something in the nearby area. Suddenly, a black bear came charging at her out of nowhere.

Lee tried to run away but she fell down after tripping on a stone wall and felt as if her leg was broken. It didn’t take long before the bear was right on top of her and she realized that her leg wasn’t broken, the bear had already bitten her.

This seems like a very frightening moment and undoubtedly, Lee was wondering where she was going to go from here, when suddenly, the Jack Russell showed up again. He charged at the bear, barking loudly and interrupting the bear’s attack.

Suddenly, the bear wasn’t worried about Lee any longer but she was focused on the little dog and left Lee alone. Lee took off as fast as she could down the trail with her Jack Russell Terrier close behind. The bear decided to head off to friendlier areas.

According to USA Today, Lee called 911 from home and her neighbors took her to the hospital. She had scratches on both sides of her body along with the bear bite.

Officials wanted to find the bear so they rushed to the area but they couldn’t find her. They feel that she probably had some cubs and when Lee and the dogs were nearby, she was doing what she could to protect them. After feeling that the threat had passed, the bear moved on.

Biologist Jaclyn Comeau made the following statement on the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department website. She said that these types of attacks don’t happen very often and there were only three others recorded in the state.

She went on to say: “However, at this time of year black bears are moving in family units and mothers will be protective of their cubs. If confronted by a bear it is essential to remain calm and back away slowly, and to fight back immediately if attacked.”
