On August 23, 2021, NBCUniversal Local, Greater Good Charities, The Animal Rescue Site, and Hill’s Pet Nutrition teamed up to fly 167 at-risk shelter pets to safety and adoption.
This life-saving airlift kicked off this year’s Clear The Shelters campaign, marking the seventh year of a national adoption drive that’s helped more than 688,000 shelter pets get adopted since 2015.
Clear the Shelters 2021 concluded on September 19, but we’re already seeing how this year’s national adoption drive has made a powerful impact.
According to a press release, Clear The Shelters 2021 has already led to 136,000 animal adoptions – and counting!
This year’s number includes 66 dogs and all 99 of the cats you helped us fly from Louisiana, where shelter overcrowding leads to a high risk of euthanasia. Your generous support helped us fly these animals to safety on the East Coast, where shelter pets are adopted in days.

Clear the Shelters also raised more than $537,000 for U.S. animal shelters, which are caring for unprecedented numbers of animals as the pandemic drags on.
This growing predicament led the Animal Rescue Site and Greater Good Charities to cover all Clear the Shelters’ transaction processing fees, ensuring participating shelters receive 100 percent of donations to continue their life-saving work.
