image - The ‘World’s Loneliest Elephant’ Made His First Friend In Years

Animals are very capable of having feelings and forming bonds with others. That is why it was heartbreaking to see the “world’s loneliest elephant” who had to live without a buddy after losing his partner back in 2012.

The poor elephant was living alone in the Marghazar Zoo in Islamabad, Pakistan. He received little-to-no social interaction for several years.

The elephant, a 36-year-old male bull Asian elephant named Kaavan, was originally from Sri Lanka. But as the Daily Mail reported, he has spent 35 years in captivity. The sadness of his years in captivity coupled with his very lonely years after he lost his partner soon attracted the attention of famed musician Cher. The musical icon soon began a campaign to try and help Kaavan.

It worked, and he was eventually adopted the Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary in the Siem Reap province. As Sky News reported, the vet who traveled with Kaavan from Pakistan to Cambodia, Amir Khalil, shared that he was a very calm boy in transit.

Khalil said that Kaavan acted like a “frequent flyer” and that made the trip with such a large animal much easier. Once he arrived, the large elephant settled into his new surroundings. But thankfully, things began to get better for Kaavan since his big transition. For a start, the lonely elephant made a friend. And it was quite touching to witness.

As one video managed to capture, Kaavan made friends with another elephant named Di Poh. The two were touching each other’s trunks in a display of newfound friendship.

It was certainly a tender moment for Kaavan to be able to interact with another elephant after so much time.

One of the sanctuary workers, Pedro, said to Stuff.co.nz, that Di Poh isn’t the only elephant that Kaavan will be interacting with. As Pedro explained, there are three other female elephants that he will be spending time with. But Pedro elaborated, it will take some time as the three females seem to be a little intimidated by the large male. However, they have hope things will go well for Kaavan.

We are crossing our fingers that Kaavan is going to be able to enjoy a happily ever after.
