An incredible collaboration between Richard Animal Care and Control (RACC) and St. Michael’s Episcopal School has brought in so much positive energy this year.

The collaboration happened earlier this year where the second grade class students from St. Michael’s Episcopal School was assigned with a very important task by their teacher, Kensey Jones, to write letters from the point of view of the pets that are up for adoption at RACC.

Along with the letters written from the animal’s perspective, students also accompanied their papers with a colorful drawing of the animal that they were assigned to.

Kensey Jones said that she needed to come up with an idea for a writing assignment when she thought about boosting the adoption rates at RACC, where she also volunteers at, through persuasive writing.

Jones added that the idea to use the assignment as a way for the adoptable pets to find their forever home was “a way that I could make their writing real for [the students], and actually make an impact on the world and our Richmond community.”

The photo above is of the students at St. Michael’s Episcopal School with RACC’s puppy ambassador, Snow. 21 out of the 24 animals involved in this assignment have since found their forever homes. Snow was even adopted just 4 days after his visit to the school!

“It makes me feel amazing because they have been in that shelter for almost all of their life. And it makes me feel, just, very good that they have forever homes,” one of the students said.
On seeing the students’ assignment attached to the kennels in the shelter, one of the adopters commented that, “our hearts were taken when we read the stories that the St. Michael’s kids wrote.”

“I hope more teachers will take this idea and partner with their local animal shelter so that more animals can find their forever homes,” said Kenzie Jones.
