Sinaloa becomes the fifth state in Mexico to ban bullfighting.
A unanimous vote by the Congress of Sinaloa just removed a veto placed last April by former governor Quirino Ordaz Coppel, which allowed bullfighting to continue.
According to Mexico News Daily, a reform to the state’s animal welfare law took place in January 2021, which initially banned bullfighting, but Ordaz vetoed the part about bullfighting last spring.
Bullfighting is now listed as what it really is – animal cruelty. Anyone found guilty of animal cruelty could face six years in prison and fines.
Most Mexican citizens are against the cruel and inhumane act and would like bullfighting to be banned nationwide. Bullfighting still takes place in 27 states even though a study conducted by Parametria found 73% of citizens are against it.
“If it only depended on public opinion, bullfighting in Mexico would be banned,” concluded the study.
Humane Society International praised Sinaloa for their decision.
“This is an important reform in Mexico because it reflects the views and sentiments of the majority of Mexican citizens who believe that bullfighting should be banned. We cannot hope to tackle violence in our society if we still allow animals to be stabbed to death for our entertainment,” said Felipe Marquez, animal cruelty program manager for HSI/Mexico.
Sadly, 250,000 bulls are killed every year due to bullfights. While more and more people are standing up against the abuse, it is still legal in several countries. Spain, France, Portugal, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, and Ecuador still allow the “unfair fights” and for bulls to be tortured and killed for entertainment.
