Abandoning a dog, no matter the reason, is against the law. However, shelters across the country are seeing more and more dogs abandoned outside their doors.
Staff at Greenville Humane Society arrived on Sunday to find a pit bull mix tied to a pole with a handwritten note outside the shelter. The sweet girl named Remy is apparently sick and her owner could no longer care for her.
The note stated, “She has illnesses I don’t believe are fixable. She needs to be put down as soon as possible.”
The 4-year-old pup was brought into the shelter and offered food and water before being examined by a veterinarian. The no-kill shelter shared with their followers what they discovered.
“Unfortunately, it was determined that Remy is suffering from a grade six heart murmur, which is the most severe and can often be felt through the chest wall. This serious condition will require an echocardiogram, at minimum. Depending on what is found during the procedure, Remy may require surgery or a lifelong medication regimen.”
But they are not giving up on her.
While the evaluation and treatment will be expensive, they are determined to give Remy a fighting chance. However, they need help. They currently have 96 sick dogs in their care and the bills are higher than the funds they currently have in their Hope Fund.
They are asking people to donate to help Remy get the treatment she needs. “Any donation, big or small, is greatly appreciated.”
Fellow dog owners who have dogs with heart murmurs shared inspirational stories about how their dogs are living a full life. One wrote, “My Izzy had an increasingly bad heart murmur, he was on heart medication but he never let it stop him. Maybe a little lethargic at times, but nonetheless an important and active part of our family. I wish I could help this sweet baby, but i hope this doesn’t discourage anyone from adopting and loving her.”
Another commented, “Donated for Remy – In honor of our Vision who had a grade 5/6 heart murmur and wasn’t expected to live past 1 year old. After heart surgery she went on to live to 12 years.”
If you are unable to care for your pet, please contact your local shelter to properly surrender them. Be sure to follow Greenville Humane Society on Facebook for more updated on Remy.
