Arizona Humane Society took in a dog found abandoned in her crate and in desperate need of some TLC.
The neglected 5-year-old Shih Tzu arrived “with severely matted fur, overgrown nails, and in need of some serious dental work,” posted the shelter.
The sweet girl was named Theodora and the staff went to work giving her a life-changing makeover.
They started with a warm bubble bath and then trimmed off all the matted fur. Next, they cut her overgrown nails and showered her with love. Her new look was completed with an adorable sweater to keep her warm.
The team then focused on her health by performing necessary dental work and doing a full examination before putting her up for adoption.
The before and after photos were posted on the shelter’s Instagram along with Theodora’s story.
She quickly won the hearts of staff, volunteers, and potential adopters.
One shelter volunteer fondly remembers Theodora and commented, “I love her! I have walked her several times as a volunteer and she is sooooooo sweet! She also snuggles into her blankets at night and grooms her stuffed babies that share her bed 🥰.”

It didn’t take long for someone to adopt the sweetheart.
The shelter hopes to help pet owners struggling to care for their pets by offering resources and support through their AHS’ Pet Resource Center (PRC). “Theodora’s start at AHS was a sad one, and is an important reminder that no pet owner should ever have to resort to abandoning their pet.”
Theodora found her forever home but there are thousands of shelter dogs waiting for someone to pick them. Adopt don’t shop!
