Most of us with a pet dog can look over at almost any time and see them resting comfortably nearby. We do our best to keep them warm and well-fed, but not every dog has that advantage. At times, dogs may live a very difficult life and that is what was recently seen in St. Louis.

A German Shepherd was found wandering the streets by Stray Rescue of St. Louis, and it was so cold outside that they were concerned he might not make it through the night.

The past week has been brutal as far as temperatures in the area are concerned, and stray dogs are not immune to that cold.

The rescuers knew how serious of a situation it was because they had recently had a mother dog and her puppy die due to cold. They found the dogs too late, and they didn’t want it to be too late for this German Shepherd.

Stray Rescue of St. Louis had the following to say on Instagram: “We tried to rescue this very BIG and very SCARED dog ALL DAY yesterday. He came close to us but cars scared him away and the leash spooked him even more than the cars.”

At first, they thought they could get the German Shepherd to come to them by coaxing him in. Unfortunately, it didn’t work so they set a trap. It seemed as if he was too tall and kept tripping the trap without actually being trapped.

They found out from some truckers nearby that he had been dumped in the area. They began to see how distressed he was when he was lifting his feet, trying to avoid the cold ground underneath him.

It wasn’t long before the night began to fall and the rescuers had to leave him behind temporarily. They worried so much that they lost sleep about it but when they went out first thing in the morning, they knew that he might be easier to catch because he would be hungry.

That is when they decided to use a bigger trap with a large pile of food. The lead rescuer at Stray Rescue of St. Louis, Donna Lochmann, led the German Shepherd to the trap with a trail of food. They were afraid that it wasn’t going to work, but it wasn’t long before he was able to be picked up and taken to the shelter.

They are so thrilled that this dog, which they named Iceberg, is safe and sound. He is now warm and it won’t be long before he is ready for a forever home.
