Officials in Thailand had their hands full when a baby elephant became trapped in a deep pit.
According to a report from Inside Edition, the mother elephant was standing guard near the top of the pit, but she was unable to get the calf out herself.
While it was clear the mother was trying to protect her baby, her presence was making it difficult for rescuers to step in and help free the calf.
Unable to move the mama elephant away from the pit, rescuers had no choice but to tranquilize her. However, things didn’t quite go as planned.
After the mother elephant was tranquilized, she somehow fell into the same pit her baby was trapped in and became trapped herself! Her body was blocking the top of the pit, so rescuers had even more work to do.
Thankfully, they were able to move the mom away from the pit and used an excavator to create a flat surface for the calf to crawl out from. Their plan worked and it wasn’t long before the mom and calf were united.
Things may not have gone exactly as planned, but we’re happy to know the calf survived and its mom stuck right by its side!
It’s hard to think what might’ve happened to the elephant calf had rescuers not stepped in to help.
