Rescuers with Hope For Paws typically respond to calls in Southern California. The rescue is based near Hollywood and Los Angeles, and those are the areas they typically help stray animals.

However, when a call came in about a stray chow dog in Central California, they made the decision to drive 300 miles to the dog’s location to help. They couldn’t leave the dog in the field for any longer and were afraid of what its fate might be if someone else picked it up.

When they got there, rescuer JoAnn Wiltz and her rescue partner were met by the woman who’d called them: Claudia Briseno.

Claudia had been feeding the dog for months, estimating he’d been living in the field for around half a year. Despite the relationship Claudia had developed with the stray dog, she could never get close enough to put a leash on the dog or get him into a crate.

She made the right decision by calling Hope For Paws because JoAnn wasn’t about to let the chow, who they named Gogo, get away. As they were working on gaining his trust, the rescuers discovered that the other little dog Claudia had with her on a leash wasn’t actually her pup, but was an abandoned dog.

The dog, Whiskey, was left behind when her owner passed away a few weeks ago. The owner’s son was responsible for the dog, but he didn’t want Whiskey and told Claudia to take her. Not sure what else to do, Claudia took Whiskey home and hoped to find a rescue that could help find a home for the small pooch.

Since JoAnn had already driven the 300 miles to Central California, she decided to take Whiskey into the care of Hope For Paws. Of course, they still had to catch Gogo before they could head back to Southern California.

While their effort to gain his trust was going ok, he kept getting skittish and walking off. They decided to set up a trap using a crate and some food and to their delight, it worked!

With Gogo safely secured in a crate, they were able to remove the tight collar that was around his neck and get him loaded into the car. He was afraid but so sweet and gentle.

Once back home, Gogo and Whiskey were given much-needed baths. After months of living in the field, Gogo was suffering from terrible matting and it took hours to get his fur combed out and trimmed.

Whiskey and Gogo were put up for adoption through LA Animal Rescue and placed in foster homes to wait for their forever families. Gogo’s adoption is currently pending and we’re so glad to know he’ll have such a better life now!
