Growing old and losing your independence is one of the toughest things we face in this life. It gets even harder when a pet is involved, however.

We want to do everything we can to give our pets the best possible care and life, but what happens when they outlive us or at least outlive the care we can give them?

Moving into a nursing home, hospice care, or a hospital often means leaving any pets behind and that can be heartbreaking to someone whose whole world revolves around their furry friend.

They might wonder and worry about the fate of their pet. Will the animal go to a family member? Will they be surrendered to a shelter? Will they be euthanized? The uncertainty surrounding the situation can cause a lot of stress, but one dog rescue is working to stop that.

Peace of Mind Dog Rescue specializes in keeping dogs and their senior owners together and they offer special services to help with that.

Beyond that, they provide a safe, loving space for dogs to move to when their elderly owners can no longer care for them.

In an interview with CNN, Carie Broecker, founder of Peace of Mind Dog Rescue, said the idea for the rescue came to her an elderly woman asked for help caring for her dog, Savannah.

Eventually, the elderly woman was unable to care for Savannah at all, even with Broecker’s help, so she was forced to make the heartbreaking decision to part ways with her.

“I said I promise I will make sure that Savannah finds a good home. She was so relieved that I could make that promise to her,” Broecker recalled.

That was back in 2009, and Peace of Mind Dog Rescue has been operating ever since. The rescue offers a dog-walking service for elderly community members, as well as a foster program and a rescue shelter for elderly dogs and dogs surrendered from the elderly. As the name suggests, the rescue provides elderly dog owners some peace of mind knowing that no matter what happens to them, their pets will be well cared for.
