Zoey was discovered thrown by a lake by two fishermen. She and her brother were cold, wet, hungry and only about 4-weeks-old. They turned these poor pups into the animal shelter, but that became their lucky day.
We’d gone to the shelter looking for a new dog because our beautiful lab, Dixie, had crossed the Rainbow Bridge a few months earlier. We wanted to honor her by rescuing another dog.

We had viewed a dog online, but when the chief of animal control met us, he said the dog we wanted was too big and strong for us to handle. Our daughter uses a w/c and he was concerned that dog could pull her over on a walk. As we were talking, a volunteer came in cuddling a darling puppy.
Our daughter and my wife immediately began ooh-ing and aww-ing over her, but we’d agreed no puppies, as we’re a busy family with two working parents and an active Paralympic athlete. I knew immediately, though, that that little black, brown, and white puppy was going to join our family!
About two weeks later, my daughter and I picked Zoey up, tucked her into my daughter’s oversized winter jacket and headed home. The shelter guessed she was a beagle, partially true, as she’s got some terrier in there. Zoey now sleeps in our bed at night, sleeps with her black and tan hound brother in the daytime, and keeps FedEx and UPS at bay! That’s been one lucky pup and we’re one lucky family!
