Sometimes our pets get upset tummies just like us humans. This can lead to all sorts of digestive issues causing pain and discomfort. For us there are a number of over-the-counter products we can take advantage of, but with dogs and cats, we have to be careful of what we give them. We don’t want to make the situation worse or end up doing something that can escalate a relatively minor situation to a trip to the vet. Pumpkin is a fiber-rich food containing important vitamins and minerals, such as vitamins A, E, and C, as well as potassium and iron.

Pumpkin for Pet Digestion

Before you add anything new to your pet’s diet, be sure to consult with your veterinarian first and ask about dosage. Having said that, most vets have no objections to using pumpkin as a digestive aid for animals. According to the AKC, “Pumpkin can ease digestion in several ways. The soluble fiber content in pumpkin adds bulk to your dog’s stool by absorbing water, and fiber fermentation produces beneficial fatty acids that supply energy to cells, stimulate intestinal sodium and water absorption, and lower the pH level of the large intestines.”

Canned Pumpkin Products

Plain canned pumpkin can be used, but it must not contain added sugars, ingredients, or fillers. It’s crucial that you read the listed ingredients carefully, however, because many sugar-free pumpkin products actually contain xylitol, which is bad for pets. Not that you’d have them on hand year-round, but plain, fresh pumpkin and pumpkin flesh are also considered safe bets for your dog, as long as nothing has been added to them and you remove the seeds.

Pumpkin Pet Products

There are several products on the market from various pet product suppliers that are readily available and conveniently sized for limited application. In other words, there’s no need to open a whole can of pumpkin pack for the small amount you’ll need over the short period of time you’ll be needing it. Weruva is one of them. It’s called Pumpkin Patch Up, and you can purchase it in small pouches that are suitable for both dogs and cats. It’s simply puréed pumpkin, so there are no artificial ingredients you have to worry about. Just follow the dosage recommendations for the size or weight of the animal.

So, the next time your pet is experiencing tummy or digestive issues, consider using a natural product like pumpkin instead.
