When a prodcuce truck got into an unfortunate accident in Louisiana, melons were spewed across the road.
The truck was headed to a watermelon festival but many of the melons ended up damanged in the accident.
Rather than letting the melons go to waste, the driver decided to donate them to a local wildlife rehabiliator!
Wildlife rehabilitator Leslie Greene shared about the situation on Facebook, writing:
“It’s the Watermelon Festival in Farmerville, unfortunately this truck had a little mishap. Lucky for us YAK’s Produce donated these Watermelons & Cantaloupes to the Wildlife Rehab!!! THANK YOU YAK’s!!”

In an interview with People, Greene said she came across the accident shortly after it happened. After learning everyone was ok, she asked the owner of Yak’s Produce if she could have the ruined melons for her rescue animals.
Yak’s was more than happy to offer her the fruit and wanted it to go to the animals rather than being discarded as waste.
In a video posted on TikTok, Greene explained that watermelon’s high water content makes it a great way for her rescue animals to hydrate, especially during the hot Louisiana summer. Beyond being hydration, watermelon is also a great source of vitamins and minerals.
The video featured some of the animals chowing down on the delicious fruit and they seemed to really enjoy it!
It was a lot of watermelon and cantaloupe, but it didn’t last long with Greene’s 42 rescue animals.
