Art, as they say, is subjective — its beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and so is its meaning!
While a painting’s color or composition may catch collectors’ attention, so can its context.
In the case of Pigcasso and her vibrant, strange landscapes, it looks like a case of all three!
Based in Franschhoek, South Africa, Pigcasso was destined for the slaughterhouse before she was discovered by artist and activist Joanne Lefson.
Lefson runs Farm Sanctuary SA, which is home to a variety of animals. Pigcasso is, however, special. Lefson claims that the pig ate everything in her stall except the paintbrushes that had been left there — her first step toward artistic greatness.
“With some positive reinforcement from Lefson, Pigcasso began to paint,” their official site says, “and the rest is hog history!”
The painting process is an extraordinary collaboration between human and pig. Lefson selects the colours; Pigcasso takes the brush in her mouth and moves it mindfully across the canvas.

The pair’s collaborations benefit Lefson’s sanctuary and also provide her a platform to speak out on the causes that she cares about, namely factory farming and the undeniable connection between unsustainable agricultural practices and climate change.
“Who would have imagined that a pig rescued from slaughter in 2016 would rise up and inspire a mass awakening between farm animals, what we eat- and its direct, devastating effects on the lives and welfare of animals and the environment,” Lefson wrote on Instagram.
