For some reason, some shelter pets just can’t seem to catch a break when it comes to adoptions. There’s nothing wrong with them, but they just keep getting passed over in favor of other animals. They’re just as cute and lovable, plus they have good house manners and do well in public. Whatever the reasons for being overlooked, they still deserve a loving forever home. That’s the case with Pete, a sweet shelter dog in Tucson, Arizona, who’s been in the Pima Animal Care Center (PACC) since October 2021.

The shelter has spoken so highly of Pete, no one can understand why he’s still homeless. That’s why we wanted to help Pete’s cause by sharing him with GreaterGood readers. A neutered male, Pete’s now estimated to be about 7 years old and weighs approximately 79 pounds, but there’s so much more to this sweet boy beyond his stats. For instance, Pete loves tug of war, chasing after frisbees, adores every stuffed animal he’s ever met, and enjoys roughhousing when given the chance.

According to a foster caregiver, Pete is calm when you’re calm and ready to expel some energy whenever you are. He will always greet you with a stuffed animal at the door when you come home, and will definitely give you sad looks when you leave. He is amazing with bath time but, of course, timid when it comes to nail trimming time.

Pete Knows His Commands

Pete knows the words sit, stay, lay down, and go into the crate. Better yet? He listens and obeys! He is definitely food motivated (aren’t all dogs?) and proud to have recently accomplished his newfound comfort with the crate, as it took months before he would set foot in it or be comfortable with the door closed. Since that time, they have not felt the need to leave him in the crate for long periods of time, as he’s shown he’s such a good boy and enjoys his freedom with the dog door while his fosters are at work.

At PACC, Pete shares his kennel with another pup, and he’s been tolerant and independent when meeting other dogs in various playgroups, which is always a good sign! A friendly boy, he loves his volunteer friends and his daily walks. Pete can, however, be shy sometimes when meeting new people, so he needs a family who can help him feel safe. Because of this, Pete may do best in a low-traffic home without constant visitors, at least initially, as well as one without very young kids who haven’t yet learned to interact appropriately with pets.

He’d also prefer a home without small dogs, cats, or pockets pets, as they’re a bit too interesting for fun loving Pete.
