Oregon firefighters are battling 22 active wildfires burning across the state. Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire District dispatched some of their team to fight the Golden Fire in Klamath County near Bly Mountain and discovered a dog in need of rescuing.
The Golden Fire started on Saturday and has already burned 2,500 acres. Klamath Falls News reported, “43 single primary residences and 43 outbuildings were destroyed by the fire” and the fire is only 9% contained.
People evacuated the area as the fire made its way toward their homes. However, in all the confusion a dog named Ladybird found herself lost in the woods.
While battling the flames, Firefighter David Ward with Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire District spotted the dog wandering around and came to her rescue.
The crew made sure she was safe and well cared for until she was reunited with her family. The fire department shared the happy story on Facebook and wrote, “Thankfully she had a phone number on her collar that helped to make contact.”
Photos were shared of Ladybird and her heroes/new friends. She made sure to thank her rescuers in her own way. People commended the brave firefighters for their work and for taking time to rescue Ladybird.
One person commented, “Everyday you’re heroes. Taking care of Ladybird and reuniting her with her people makes you SUPERHEROES!”
Another said, “That’s one grateful, lucky and happy pup. Cheers to all dog owners that have instant ID on their pooches!”
Firefighters are making progress and hope to have the fire contained soon.
“Our hearts go out to the Bonanza community and those affected by the Golden Fire,” said Matt Howard, Oregon Department of Forestry Team 2 Incident Commander. “We grieve with the community and your loss. Our goal on this fire has been, and will continue to be, to contain this fire to minimize its impact. Our job is to fully suppress this fire so the recovery process can begin. That is our commitment to you.”
