Officers carried two police dogs to safety after their vehicles were hit by a fleeing driver.
Recently, concerned customers filed multiple reports to the Dunedin police regarding a driver who’d run into multiple vehicles at a local Pak ‘n Save.
Before police could arrive, the driver stole a car from a workshop and fled the scene. Thankfully, he didn’t get far.
Shortly after fleeing the scene, he crashed into even more parked vehicles. Officers quickly arrived at the new scene and cornered the driver in a driveway.
The driver, who was still in the stolen vehicle, wasn’t ready to give up the chase. Rather than admit defeat and be taken peacefully into custody, he put his car in reverse and rammed into the police car directly behind him – a police dog van. He damaged two additional police vehicles in the process.

The driver escaped on foot, leaving a mess of smashed vehicles and broken glass behind him.
Of course, the officers were immediately concerned with getting the police dogs away from the accident scene and to safety.
While some officers went off to catch the criminal who was then, which they successfully did, others stayed behind to carry the dogs to safety. Officers could be seen carrying the dogs over broken glass and debris that were strewn across the road.
According to news outlet stuff, one of the dogs required a health assesment following the incident, but its injuries were not life-threatening.
The driver, identified as a 25-year-old male, was detained and is facing a future court date.
The incident could’ve turned out a lot worse for the police pups. Their handlers are the real heroes here, for making sure the dogs made it to safety.
