It was fall of 2011, when my then fiance (now husband) and I were driving home at one in the morning after seeing a movie. I was tired and laying back in my seat, fighting to stay awake because I knew we would be home soon. Suddenly, my fiance slowed to a stop and put the car in reverse. I didn’t think I felt a thud, but I was convinced we had hit something. I sat up in my seat,...

I received a call from a friend: “There’s a puppy in the hoarder’s house next door. I think she needs help.” As soon as we pulled up, I knew the situation was bad. There were 3 large untrained German Shepherds fenced into a small area in the backyard. When the woman brought the puppy out, 6 smaller adult dogs came with her. The puppy hid under a chair and refused...

NASCAR Driver Alex Bowman Dedicates Cup Series to Animal Shelter Nonprofit

The ever-expanding traditions around NASCAR racing have shaped the way we watch the races today. From the Budweiser Duel at Daytona to kissing the bricks at Indy, these customs have become just as significant to NASCAR fans as the races themselves. And along with that comes, of course, the moving billboards, with every inch of the exterior of a racer’s car covered in advertisements and sponsors. Photo: Facebook/NASCAR The tradition of sponsored cars started with local businesses when NASCAR was first founded in 1948. However, the...

After moving from Houston to Dallas with two cats and a dog, we weren’t in the market for another pet. Starting new jobs, getting accustomed to the new neighborhood and getting our senior dog with congestive heart failure ready for pacemaker surgery is not conducive to introducing a new member of the family. But sometimes they come to us when we least expect it; when that happens,...

My cousin said that if he survived, he would take him, but at the time he was renting a home from my...

I had just turned 19, failed out of college, and was living out of my car in California when I decided to make a change. I threw a dart at a map I had placed on the wall of my friends living room. Boom! It hit Tennessee, and one week later I packed up everything I owned, sold what I could, and drove east. An acquaintance of mine had a cousin who lived in Tennessee and offered me to let me...

Let’s set the stage: Sunday, 9pm at night, neighbors young son knocks on our door saying his mom needs help. I hurried across the street to see what was wrong. Hook was found in a puddle of blood on the side of the road as a kitten. He was mistaken for a pile of garbage. A kind person scooped him up and brought him into the animal hospital I worked at. His chin was degloved, his back leg was broken, and at the time, it was believed his front leg was also broken. Barely breathing and covered in blood, we were unsure he would make it through the...

One night, my husband came back from the gym and this young (6-month-old tabby) cat followed him, so we kept it for the night. Father Arrested For Entering Elephant Enclosure At San Diego Zoo with Young Daughter For A Selfie

There’s a reason zoos put up multiple barriers around animal enclosures – to keep people out. However, one young father carried his two-year-old daughter over and through the barriers and into the elephant enclosure at San Diego Zoo for a selfie. The African bull elephant promptly charged the intruder and the dangerous and terrifying incident was captured on video by a bystander. Screenshot: Facebook/CBS News “We told him to get out and he turned around and he saw it, thankfully, just in time,” witness Jake Ortale told...

In September 2012, my wife received a phone call from her friend that she had found a kitten. The kitten was badly injured, and was missing its bottom lip. Being the cat lovers that we are, we asked that friend to hold onto the kitten for one more day so that we could go and take a look. When we got there, our hearts broke for the poor little thing, he couldn’t have been older than...

Crystal’s Story

Crystal Lynn was born sometime in the early spring of 1999. I adopted her at an event at a local Petco. Animal Control had picked her up a few weeks before running with a pack of large dogs. Crystal had always been a very aloof, taking control, kind of dog. She walked into our house wanting to be the “top dog.” When I brought her home and introduced her to our other three dogs...

New Survey Shows How Covid-19 Strengthened America’s Bond With Its Animals

There’s no question that 2020 was a difficult year. Now a new study shows how our pets helped get us through it. According to a national survey conducted by Morning Consult and Money.com, the pandemic helped strengthen the bond between Americans and their animals. Of the 1,384 pet owners who participated in the study, 58 percent of respondents reported a greater appreciation for their fur family — often resulting in extra displays of affection. Now a year after Covid-19 began, 2/3 of respondents would do anything to save their...

Black Cat Walks On A Keyboard And Accidentally Plays ‘Horror Movie’ Music

Mitzi is a black cat who has a very unique sense of humor. At least, that is what we are choosing to believe here. Mitzi’s owner caught her standing on the keyboard, but she wasn’t just up there for fun. She was playing music that sounds straight out of a horror film! Photo: YouTube/Loz Lomas Black cats get a bad enough rep without the extra spookiness of the tunes she was playing, but it seems that Mitzi’s owner wasn’t too afraid of the music. In fact, they recorded the tunes so we can all listen in to what a spooky...

Dad Helps English Mastiff That’s Afraid Of The Water Learn To Swim Is Terrified Of The Pool

When we think of big dogs, we often thing of them as being fearless. They’re not supposed to be afraid of anything. In fact, we like to think of them as our protectors, therefore they aren’t supposed to fear anything. However, anyone who has ever owned a big dog knows that they can actually be giant softies at heart. Photo: Wikimedia Commons And some of the things that these large canines fear, are actually quite silly. But it’s so cute to watch them get all flustered over something so minor. One great example is Sampson,...

Sleepy Dog Tries Her Best To Stay Awake

We’ve all been there – so sleepy that we can barely keep our eyes open. I remember when I’d first moved continents I was so jet-lagged I was struggling to stay awake on the bus. I was doing that tired head bob and accidentally smacked my head into the bus’s window. Needless to say, I was wide awake after that. Humans are used to fighting off fatigue. Of course, it’s not just people who have to put up with this – our pets will sometimes find themselves fighting the fatigue as well. Of course, they do it in a...
