How to safely feed your dog a plant-based diet

From health benefits to environmental sustainability, there are a lot of perks to plant-based diets. But can our dogs thrive without eating meat or other animal products? “Can my dog be vegan?” Though many experts are hesitant to admit it, the answer to this increasingly common question is yes. But hold the phone…it’s not quite that simple. Sure, in theory many dogs can thrive on a vegan diet. The trouble is, meeting your pup’s nutritional requirements on plants alone is a lot easier said than done. In fact, the...

Dog Pokes Her Face Through Pipe In Hilarious Video

Dogs take their duty seriously — for all they know, they might be the only thing standing between their beloved family and the absolute chaotic unknown of the outside world. While this is the reason we get stories like “hero dog saves owner from rattlesnake,” some dogs are a little goofier in their attempts at heroism. For example, take Gabi the guard dog, who guards the family home in São Paulo, Brazil with her life! PHOTO: PEXELS / MAGDA EHLERS To do this, she’s not afraid to stick her neck out. The little pup...

Dog Finds Her New Forever Home After Being Left To Die In A Landfill

Looking at a rescue dog, you can never know exactly what their story is. One of their best and most enviable traits is the ability to put the past behind them and embrace their forever home with passion and love. For Amie, when watching the big and playful girl romp around with her little chihuahua brother, you’d never know that she was found barely clinging to life, nearly paralyzed from injuries in a cardboard box discarded at a landfill. Her story is one of resilience, luck, and, fortunately, one with a very happy ending! Photo:...

How Goats Are Helping In The Fight Against Forest Fires

As wildfires continue to ravage the West Coast states, and droughts drag on longer and harsher than they have in recent memory, it’s no surprise that everyone from ranchers to government officials are looking for new solutions. What is surprising is that a well-established practice from decades past is proving especially useful in some areas. The technique uses goat herds to thin vegetation in susceptible areas, potentially creating a fire break by deploying the animals in repeated patterns. It may sound strange, but for those familiar...

Man Goes Viral For Being Neighborhood “Cat Whisperer”

Anyone whose familiar with cats knows how picky they can be. It seems that we don’t choose our cats, but they choose us instead, and they might love us or hate us. Unlike dogs, it doesn’t matter if we give a cat a place to live, food, or attention. The cat’s only loyalty is to the people it deems worthy. While that generally seems true, there are always those few people who seem to connect with cats on a deeper level. The cats choose them, and it’s not a coincidence. That was the case for a man named Chris Watson, AKA,...

House Cat Becomes BFFs With Wild Moose

We’ve seen time and time again the fact that friendships can extend beyond species. Sometimes a cat and a dog might become BFFs, other times, a pet becomes friends with a wild animal. That’s the case with Lovey the moose and Plumps the house cat. The two have been friends for years, forming a bond after Lovey started coming around Plumps’ house. Photo: Pixabay/Co_Sch Plumps’ owner, Dan, shares their life in Alaska on Instagram. He shows plenty of videos and pictures of wildlife that comes to their home, but the most...

Last Chance to keep APA! in the Heart of Austin

Oct 07, 2021 Today is the last day for our City Council to decide if the work we do for the City of Austin, keeping it a No Kill city by taking all animals who would be euthanized at the Austin Animal Center, is worth the use of one acre of land at Town Lake Animal Center. We believe No Kill needs to be front and center in Austin. We believe APA! should be kept in the heart of Austin, showing every other city in our nation that eliminating the killing of pets in our shelter is important to our city, our city council, and to every Austinite....

We Need Government Animal Services That Work

Oct 06, 2021 There is one day left before we know whether the city council has taken action on our APA! Resolution by adding it to the next city council meeting agenda. What keeps rising to the top of criticism of our resolution from council offices is that they don’t understand why Austin Pets Alive! should be allowed to help communities outside of the greater Austin metro area. They see and hear about animals having long lengths of stay at Austin Animal Center(AAC) and the kennels being overcrowded there. Some believe that Austin Pets...

Idaho Police Officer Helps Rescue Owl Trapped In Plastic On Busy Highway

There are over a dozen owl species that call Idaho home, including the Great Horned Owl. The raptors are easy to identify with their long tufts of feathers that resemble ears. They are commonly seen across the state, but rarely on the median of a busy highway. Idaho State Police (ISP) received multiple calls from concerned commuters on I-84 in Nampa about a Great Horned Owl trapped in plastic. Dispatchers called wildlife rescue, Animals in Distress, for help and sent Sgt. Brandalyn Crapo to the scene. “Traffic is very heavy on that...

After Barn Owner Threatens to Throw Stray Kittens Into the River, Employee Saves Them

This story was originally shared on The Animal Rescue Site. Submit your own rescue story here. Your story just might be the next to be featured on our blog! I was working at a barn where someone had dropped off a very teeny and very pregnant cat. She was super sweet but disappeared almost as quickly as she had been dropped off, so we assumed she was somewhere giving birth and hiding her kittens. For a few weeks we would see her off and on, slinking around the barn but never giving up a clue to where the kittens were. KITTENS. PHOTO: ADOBE...

Terrified Dog Tied To Railroad Tracks and Left to Die In South Carolina

Dan Winkleman was walking down his driveway when he heard a dog barking in the forest behind his house. But these weren’t the carefree barks of a happy pup playing in the woods. As the barks grew more frantic, the South Carolina man began to wonder if something was wrong. “But this dog, it sounded like you know when a dog frantically barks?’ Dan Winkelman told WBTW News 13. “And it was. I heard it and it was coming from an area where there isn’t a house. Where it’s just woods.” Photo: Pixabay...
