Longest-Ever “Empty The Shelters” Event Going On Now To Help Shelters At Crisis Capacity Across The Country
Many animal rescues and shelters are operating in crisis mode due to an influx in animals. Dogs and cats continue to arrive daily, and shelters are struggling to feed and care for them all. The best way to help is to adopt. Adopting saves two lives – the animal you adopt and the one you make space for in the shelter. BISSELL Pet Foundation (BPF) is hoping to help thousands of pets find loving homes by offering their longest-ever Empty the Shelters Summer National event which will run from July 11-31. 275 animal shelters in 42 states are...
Organs! The forgotten superfoods for dogs and cats
Organ meats are often an afterthought in deciding on our pets’ food, but they pack a huge nutritional wallop. We all know it’s best to serve pet food that incorporates elements of our beloved fur kids’ natural diet involving high meat concentrations. One overlooked aspect most people forget, though, is the additional foraging they might have done, providing them with a nutritional boost that kept them roaming at peak performance. In this activity, our pets would find what we call superfoods. Superfoods are those which are...

Draco the Doberman Expresses His Love in a Very Special Way
Dogs are family-oriented animals. They don’t only show affection to humans but also to their dog siblings. It’s an endearing moment for pet owners to see their pets get along. Those moments are picture-worthy and too cute not to share on the internet. Dogs will often express their love for one another through playing and grooming. Physical contact such as rubbing up, nuzzling, and nudging is also a part of their love language. Often, dogs become inseparable and tend to be protective of one another. There are instances when dogs...

Backcountry Skiers Surprised To Find Platypus Playing In The Snow
A group of backcountry skiers were caught off-guard by an unsuspected visitor: a platypus playing in the snow. Saving money on dog food can be expensive in the long run
Cheaper dog food is cheaper for a reason. The quality of ingredients suffers and eventually so can your pet. With inflation spinning out of control and everything including pet food going way up in price, you could be forgiven for wanting to save money on anything you can, including pet food. That could be a costly mistake, though. Cheaper pet foods often have cheaper ingredients and typically use a lot of filler without a lot of nutritional value. As it is for humans, the quality of the food we eat has a big effect on our health. There are...
How This County Shelter Is Still Sending About Half Its Pets to Transfer Partners
You don’t need us to tell you how hard things are in animal welfare right now. So when we caught wind of a municipal shelter whose transfer rates to rescue partners hadn’t dropped in 2022, but had stayed robust—with nearly half its pets being transferred to rescue partners—we reached out to find out more. We’re talking just over 2,400 of about 4,800 pets in 2021, and nearly 1,000 of right around 2,000 pets so far in 2022, as of late June. The program is so successful that even now, as a government shelter in the...
How Much Does It Cost to Put a Dog Down?
Even when our pets live long and happy lives, it’s really never long enough. The decision to let a beloved pet go is never an easy one, but if your dog is suffering, putting your dog down is the most compassionate thing to do. What is euthanasia? The term “putting a dog down” is common but somewhat old-fashioned and impersonal. “Putting a dog to sleep” is also commonly used. Most veterinarians and pet parents prefer the term “euthanasia.” But all of these terms boil down to the same thing: to humanely...
