Being a stray dog in Mexico can be a challenging and harsh existence. Stray dogs in Mexico often struggle to find food, shelter, and medical care, facing the dangers of traffic, disease, and abuse.
That’s the reality that a Belgian Malinois named Dennis found himself in. The poor pup was living on the streets in Baja California, Mexico where it’s suspected someone hit him with a shovel and injured his legs.
According to The Dodo, a travel influencer named Henry happened to spot Dennis laying in a field, unable to get up. He knew he couldn’t leave the dog there to suffer and die, so he quickly scooped him up and rushed him to the veterinarian.
After being assessed for injuries, the vet suspected someone hit him with the shovel and that’s why he couldn’t walk. Dennis was ordered “several weeks” of crate rest to help his legs heal and strengthen, which Henry was more than happy to take on.
It took weeks, but Dennis slowly learned to walk again. Eventually, he was ready to move on with his life and that’s when a foster mama named Danielle stepped up to help.
Speaking with The Dodo, Danielle described Dennis as being “nervous of the world, malnourished, and still gaining strength in his legs.”
She was a new dog mom but determined to help him to the best of her abilities. As Dennis grew stronger, the impact of his previous life began to shine through and he started displaying fear-based reactiveness toward strangers.
Dennis struggled with aggression and fear, but Danielle was paitent and continued taking him out with a muzzle and a “Do Not Pet” vest so he could get accustomed to the world and build confidence in his new life.
Danielle realized she couldn’t part with Dennis and became a foster fail mom, and after an entire year with her new dog, she invited Henry back to visit.
At fist, Henry and Danielle were unsure how Dennis would react. He didn’t respond well to strangers and it’d been so long since he’d seen Henry. However, their fears were quickly diminished the moment Dennis laid eyes on Henry.
The sweet pup immediately began pulling on his leash to see Henry and was so excited! Henry was likely the first human to ever show the dog love or compassion and that’s not something Dennis would soon forget.
