Rufus has changed the way I see the world since before he was even mine. I would watch him next door dodging cars in the driveway and would feel sad every time. One day he came out limping and I finally just asked my neighbors if I could have him, they handed him over to me without hesitation. That was the day my life changed forever!

Rufus was a happy, healthy puppy for the first month I had him. He used to sleep with me under the covers every night. One particular night we were fast asleep and all of the sudden I woke up to him having a seizure. This was on a Saturday night. I didn’t know what to do so I tried to find an animal hospital right away! None were open until Monday morning.

By the time we got to the vet he had been seizing for almost 2 days straight. The doc put him on phenobarbitol and it made no difference. We finally figured out he had distemper which is usually a death sentence. My vet mentioned that there was an experimental serum that can be made to save his life but they couldn’t guarantee that he would be “normal.” I told them I wanted to do what I had to, to save his life.

Rufus survived with the help of the Newcastle Vaccine. He suffered some severe head trauma due to the seizures and it has been a long road but I wouldn’t trade one day with him for anything else in the world. By the way, he is excellent at taking selfies and photo-bombing as you can see in this Mohawk picture!
