On November 30, Tacoma Animal Control began bringing cats and kittens to the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County from an overwhelmed community member. Over 40 cats were found living in the same dwelling, with some cats living in the walls.

As of December 5, the shelter had taken in 27 of the cats and kittens, with more coming in every day. They vary in age from newborn kittens to adult cats. Many of them are fearful, under socialized, and several are in poor health.

Currently, five kittens are receiving medical care for upper respiratory infections. One adult cat is in critical condition showing signs of dehydration and extreme distress. Shortly after arriving at the shelter, two neonatal kittens passed away despite the shelter staff’s efforts to warm them in an incubator.

This isn’t the only recent case of animals in urgent need, either.

On December 5, the shelter also took in 10 8-week-old German shepherd puppies after they were found abandoned next to a local business in Lakewood. The puppies are currently being examined by the rescue’s veterinary team.

The veterinarians continue to provide much-needed medical treatment and care for these neglected and abandoned pets, but thanks to a friend of the shelter, through December 31, all donations up to $50,000 will be triple-matched. To help, visit the shelter’s website.
