On April 09, 2021, The J. M. Smucker Co. announced a limited, voluntary recall of two lots of Meow Mix® Original Choice Dry Cat Food due to potential salmonella contamination.
No illnesses have been reported. The company issued this recall “out of an abundance of caution”.
Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and humans who handle the contaminated food, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.
Salmonella was the cause of multiple recalls last year.

Where Was It Sold?
The potentially contaminated products were sold at select Walmart stores in the following states:
- Illinois
- Missouri
- Nebraska
- New Mexico
- Oklahoma
- Utah
- Wisconsin
- Wyoming
The recall is only for the specified food and does not impact any other Meow Mix® products.
Symptoms Of Salmonella In Pets
– lethargy
– diarrhea or bloody diarrhea
– fever
– vomiting
– decreased appetite
– abdominal pain
Pets that are infected can be carriers and pass it on to other animals and humans. If you have fed any of the recalled product and your pet is showing any of the above symptoms, call your vet immediately.
What To Do
If you have purchased any of the above products and the lot number matches the recall, stop feeding immediately.
People who have purchased the recalled food are instructed to dispose of it and wash their hands and all surfaces.
The recall states, “Some cats may not develop diarrhea, but may have a decreased appetite, fever, and excessive salivation. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian. Some cats may not appear sick but can spread infection to other animals and humans in the household.”
