Life’s not fair. It’s something that’s often told to kids and grownups alike, but that sentiment also extends to the animal kingdom.

Anyone who works in animal rescue can tell you that life truly isn’t fair for the stray, neglected, and abandoned animals that are out there. Just take Lucy, for example.

The golden retriever was found in someone’s back yard and no one was claiming her as their own. Thankfully, someone got in touch with Lee Asher of The Asher House in Estacada, Oregon and he was able to meet Lucy and get her the help that she so desperately needed.

Lucy was hesitant and seemed tired, but she wasn’t aggressive or trying to run away. Lee shared about her on various social media platforms and spread the word that she’d been found…but nobody called for her. Lucy didn’t receive a single response from an owner, a friend, or anyone else who might know where she came from.

In a YouTube video, the Asher, explained that they’re pretty sure Lucy was used in a puppy mill to breed litters of puppies for irresponsible pet owners to purchase. It’s not uncommon for breeders to abandon mother dogs once they’re no longer effective at producing puppies. It’s heartbreaking, but it’s the reality of backyard and puppy mill breeding.

Puppies from those breeders are often sold on Facebook, Craigslist, and pet stores by people pretending that the dogs are well cared for and properly bred. Sadly, buying dogs from those places can and frequently does lead to aging mama dogs being abandoned or killed.

Lee could tell that Lucy was struggling. “She just seems like she’s about to give up,” Asher said in the video. While Lucy might’ve been ready to give up, Asher definitely wasn’t going to give up on her.

Lee slowly worked with Lucy and got her comfortable with the rescue dogs. Slowly but surely, she became more enthusiastic about life until she was finally running around and playing with the other dogs!

She now knows what it’s like to be loved by a human for the first time in her life and that’s such a beautiful thing.
