A very adorable video has been making the rounds on the internet after one man from Nova Scotia in Canada was filmed feeding the local raccoons on his back porch.
James Blackwood, the man in the video, is a retired Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer. He has spent the last 25 years consistently caring for these adorable creatures, and has even proclaimed himself to be a “Racoon Whisperer.”
According to Blackwood, the feeding of the raccoons was originally an undertaking started by his late wife. However, just before she passed, she asked Blackwood to take over for her – and he’s been honoring her memory ever since by caring for these animals. As Blackwood explained on his YouTube channel, he lives in a remote area that has more forest areas than neighbors, so there are plenty of raccoons around.
Blackwood stated that his raccoons aren’t “totally dependent” on him for food. He has shared that they are pretty independent on their own as they “leave in the fall and in the spring to seek out new territories to start families.”

The video that has put him on a viral path was the one that showed him feeding at least 20 raccoons at one time. On his channel, he also has other videos that show him sharing his passion with visitors who also get in on the action of feeding the raccoons. The raccoons that Blackwood feeds get pretty tasty treats such as chicken, hotdogs, grapes, kibble, and dry dog food – all foods that satiate their omnivore appetites.
Blackwood has gotten to know his raccoon friends over the years and has even named two of the most frequent visitors to his home, Woody and Sammy. Besides caring for the many raccoons, Blackwood also has two other pets that keep him busy: two indoor cats named Connor and Charlotte.
