A mama elephant and her calf were rescued from a roadside drainage hole in central Nakhon Nayok province in Thailand.

The one-year-old calf fell into the hole while the distressed mother stood guard over him.

The rescue took place in the pouring rain as vets acted quickly to save them. Unfortunately, the mother ended up hitting her head after she was sedated, so rescuers used a truck-mounted boom lift to pull her out of the hole before climbing on top of her to perform CPR.

Meanwhile, a digger cleared away dirt so her baby could climb out from the slippery mud that surrounded them.

As soon as the calf was pulled from the drainage hole, he began suckling his mother. Thankfully she soon regained consciousness, and they were both deemed well.

The two of them immediately returned back into the wild.

The entire rescue took more than three hours.

Dr. Chananya Kanchanasarak, Khao Yai national park Department vet, explained that they had to give the mother three doses of tranquilizers because it was impossible for them to rescue her baby while she was nearby. Unfortunately, she moved toward her baby before passing out, which is how she hit her head.

Thankfully, the outcome of this rescue was a happy one, and both mama and her calf are now safe, thanks to the efforts from rescuers and vets.
