When it comes to magpies, there’s an old rhyme that goes something like “one for sorrow, two for joy.” But there is nothing sorrowful about the adorable little magpie named Penguin.
The magpie has become a standard fixture in the backyard of the Bloom family who lives in Newport, Australia after they rescued him and nursed him back to health.
Though released back into the wild, the magpie makes frequent trips back home just to hang out and say hi, or to seek shelter whenever it rains.
The Bloom family first found Penguin back in 2013, when the magpie was about three weeks old. She had fallen out of her nest and was unable to fly back. The little bird was struggling to fly and could barely get off the ground. The family, which includes husband and wife Cameron and Sam along with their kids, Reuben, Noah, and Oli, all pitched in and helped to care for Penguin. Thanks to their family effort, they were able to nurse her back to health.
Eventually, it was time for Penguin to head back to her home in the wild. But that wasn’t the last they’d see of her. In the years that followed, Penguin often returned to visit her favorite people. The adorable magpie is known to be able to play games with the family such as catch. She also helps herself into the family home, freely walking around the place like it’s no big deal. The magpie even knows how to perch on her family’s shoulders – which has led to some pretty stunning pictures taken by Cameron.
Penguin is even known to wait for the whole family to leave their home in the morning before she flies off for the day. And the loyal bird is always there to greet the kids when they return home from school. As the dad shared with ABC News, “It’s like a dog wagging its tail – she sits there in the tree and flaps her wings like she’s excited.”
There is no doubt that this happy little bird will be bringing lots of joy to the Bloom family for years to come. Check out some of the photos below:
