One afternoon as I was walking for a few miles after lunch, I heard this loud kitten mew. It was like a klaxon. I started looking for the source, and I saw a streak of grey fur run from one truck’s wheel well to the SUV parked on the curb where I was standing. Naturally, I investigated.

I saw a tiny grey and white kitten. He looked about 9-10-weeks-old. His eyes were this lovely silver green. I tried to get him out of the car, and my arm was all the way up in the wheel well fishing around in the engine, trying to grab the kitten, when the owner of said vehicle came out of her house, keys in hand. I looked at her as she stared at me and said, “You can’t drive this car, there is a kitten in your engine!”

She got her husband to help with the kitten rescue and popped the hood. We fished around for a bit, until her husband banged the side of the car, which scared the kitten into coming to my hand.

Apparently they had been hearing him crying since Monday, so this little guy was a tough critter! Very resilient!

They took him in, hoping to keep him, and I kept walking. About 15 minutes later, she found me again and told me that their dogs objected to said wee kitten. She asked if I wanted him. I couldn’t keep him, but I knew my sister had promised my niece her own kitten.

My niece named him Wolf. He is the sweetest thing, with a gloriously loud purr, and he snuggles and loves up with my sister’s other three cats. He is one of their family now, but he definitely runs to me when I visit; he remembers who took him out of the engine and found him a forever home!
