When some kids in Russia came across a dog on the side of the road, they immediately recognized that he needed help.

According to Animal Shelters, the dog was found unable to move and “gasping for breath.” While some kids might’ve kept going, these children did the right thing by showing compassion and calling for help.

Rescuers with Dog Space in Moscow assisted with the rescue and successfully got the pooch, who they named Nika, to a veterinarian.

It was clear that the dog was struggling to walk, but they didn’t realize the extent of his injuries until the medical team performed an X-ray. The results were not good and revealed the dog was suffering from a broken spine in addition to a nasty infection.

They don’t believe Nika was hit by a car or involved in an accident. Because of the specific nature of her injuries, the medical team believes someone hurt the dog intentionally and left her to die on the road.

Emergency surgery could save the dog’s life, but it was unlikely she’d ever walk normally again. Rescuers decided to give Nika the best fighting chance at surviving and living a happy life by going through with the surgery.

As suspected, Nika couldn’t walk following her surgery but rescuers knew they could help her live her fullest life. They gifted her a wheelchair and while she didn’t take to the new device at first, she slowly grew used to walking in it.
