For 15 years, a white Arabian horse named Jenny has been taking herself for long walks through town. The mare used to enjoy the walks with her owner, Werner Weischedel, but now she walks alone.
According to a post by Keith Anderson, Weischedel became unable to ride Jenny around 15 years ago but the mare didn’t want to stop her daily walks through Frankfurt, Germany.
Instead of keeping her contained in a stable, Weischedel allowed Jenny to go out through the gate – and the horse walked herself along their usual route and came back home for lunch!
Ever since then, Jenny has been taking her daily walks each morning. She greets usual faces and receives treats from passersby, and occasionally, she startles an unsuspecting stranger.
In the post, Anderson shared, “A piece of paper is attached to her halter that reads, ‘My name is Jenny. I didn’t run away, I’m just walking. Thank you.”
Before Jenny became a solo traveler through the avenues of the Fechenheim district, her owner shared that she was part of a “caravan.” Speaking with FNP, Weischedel said, “We used to have a second mare, Charlie, and a second white shepherd. There we went as a white caravan through Fechenheim. Almost 15 years.”
Now, the group is down to just Jenny, though the German Shepherd Evita occasionally tags along for part of the daily walks.
Jenny walks through the same route about eight times each day, covering nine to 12 miles before heading home for lunch.
According to Bored Panda, a local vet who gives Jenny routine checkups, Maren Hellige, said that the mare “seems very relaxed and satisfied,” despite her unique lifestyle.
Throughout the years, Jenny has yet to cause any safety incidents, though she does get reported to the police on a somehwat regular basis. However, the police know about Jenny and her owner and are fine with the arrangement they have.
Jenny really gets to live the best of both worlds, enjoying home life with her owner and the independence of wandering the town. What else could a horse ask for?
