A rescue dog is being praised as a hero after alerting a sanitation worker to his owner’s condition and possibly saving her life.

88-year-old Gwendola Johnson lives with her rescue dog, Sandy, in Glendale, California.

Gwendola adopted Sandy several years ago and the two have been nearly inseparable ever since.

It’s a good thing because back in 2020, Gwendola stepped outside her door and tripped. She ended up falling onto the ground and she couldn’t get back up.

Because of the way her house and driveway are positioned, no one could see Gwendola lying on the ground from the road. Someone would need to walk all the way up to her door to spot her, and that could take days.

According to WTHR 13, Gwendola and Sandy were outside for about an hour when they heard the garbage truck approaching.

The sanitation worker, Kirk White, couldn’t see Gwendola or hear her cries for help, and the elderly woman knew he might be her only chance of surviving. That’s when Gwendola told Sandy to “go get him!” and Sandy listened!

As captured on Gwendola’s home security camera, you can see Sandy approaching White and barking at him to get his attention. White immediately noticed Sandy and followed him to where Gwendola was lying, trapped and helpless.

“The way he was barking (was) like ‘I have something to show you. Come follow me this way. There’s something I want you to see,’” White said in an interview with NBCLA.

Needless to say, Gwendola is incredibly grateful that Sandy was by her side and that White was willing to listen to the dog and help out.
