Eight Golden Retrievers headed to Uvalde, Texas, a day after gunman opened fire at Robb Elementary School, to provide support and comfort to those affected by this senseless tragedy.
The trained dogs are with the Lutheran Church Charities K-9 Ministries, who travel across the country, providing comfort to those impacted by disasters.
The dogs traveled from all over Texas just 24 hours after the shooting, and are there to help those who are not quite ready to process what happened or answer questions.
“We listen if they talk,” Bonnie Fear, LCCs’ K-9 crisis response coordinator, told GMA. “We’re silent. We let the dogs connect with people, and they can express their feelings at that time, and we’re not counselors, so we are just present, standing with them in their sorrow.”
LLC K-9 Comfort Dog teams set up LLC Hearts of Mercy & Compassion, Crosses for Losses in Uvalde’s town square. They hand wrote the name of each victim on the crosses, along with a bible verse.
The eight comfort dogs stayed in the square to comfort the community as they searched for the names of their loved ones.
“We listened to stories, prayed and cried together,” LLC K-9 Comfort Dogs wrote on Facebook. “Please continue to keep Uvalde, TX and our ministry in your prayers as we continue to be present for those who are suffering and in need here.”
The dogs will attend the mass vigil and are able to connect with students, staff, first responders, and families of the victims and survivors.
