The loyal and loving Labrador retriever has been the most popular dog breed in the U.S. for the past 31 years, but a new list shows that the French bulldog has taken the title.
American Kennel Club (AKC), the world’s largest registry of purebred dogs, just announced the most popular dog breeds of 2022 according to their registration statistics. They recognize 200 dog breeds and released a list ranking them in order of popularity.
For the first time in over three decades the Labrador came in second to the French bulldog. Over the years the French bulldog has gained in popularity due to their charisma, size, and quiet demeanor.
But they aren’t the only ones to make their way up the list. The Belgian Malinois (32) and Cane Corsi (18) are slowly making their way towards the top.
The 10 Most Popular Purebred Dog Breeds in America are:
-
1. French bulldog
2. Labrador retriever
3. Golden retriever
4. German shepherd
5. Poodle
6. Bulldog
7. Rottweiler
8. Beagle
9. Dachshund
10. German shorthaired pointer
The list does not include popular “designer” breeds like Labradoodles or other mix breeds. While it is fun to see where your dog’s breed falls on the list, our number one breed will always be RESCUED.
If you are looking to add a dog to your home, please adopt! You can find all of the most popular dog breeds in shelters or rescues across the country.
For instance, at the time of writing there are 296 French bulldogs at shelters on Petfinder waiting for a forever home.
Good News or Bad?
The historic news is concerning to some pet health professionals who worry that the flat-faced breed prone to breathing and other serious health issues will only get worse.
French bulldogs are bred for a certain look that can be detrimental to their health and The British Veterinary Association urges people not to purchase flat-faced breeds.
Gudrun Ravetz, President of The British Veterinary Association states, “We need to put a stop to these dogs’ wrinkly faces, big eyes and curly tails – which can cause so many life limiting health problems – being seen as appealing characteristics.”
Instead, they encourage people to find a dog that fits their lifestyle and not get one based on popularity. Head to your local shelter and meet your new best friend!
