Two little cuties were found hiding behind a Redbox stand outside a CVS storefront in the small town of Truckee, California.
It was on a Friday morning when stores were just beginning to open up and most people were just starting their last workday of the week when Truckee police called the BEAR League to request some help with extracting two stranded 3-month-old bear cubs at the Truckee shopping center.
The two police officers and the BEAR League responders said that the ‘Momma Bear’ was out of sight nearby and that the cubs were terrified and would not come out from behind the Redbox. They also assessed that since more and more people are arriving at the scene, the mother bear would be too afraid to come and fetch her cubs.
Ann Bryant from BEAR League and the police officers were able to capture the bear cubs eventually. “Wrestled the screaming cubs, one at a time, into the kennel. The crowd that gathered cheered,” BEAR League wrote in their Facebook post.
Even though the mother bear was nowhere to be seen, the BEAR League said in their post that they had a pretty good idea on where ‘Momma Bear’ was. After capturing the two cubs, the rescuers drove around the area where the forest met the parking lot and carried the kennels up into the woods. Hoping that the screams from the cubs would alert the mother bear as to where they are, the rescuers placed the kennel in an area where they are sure that the cubs wouldn’t stray again. “We placed the kennel at the bottom of a large tree with only one way out…. up the tree. They cooperated perfectly,” They said.
The rescuers also said that as they were monitoring the cubs during their release, one of the police officers said that they saw ‘Momma Bear’ approaching them. And as they quickly backed away, ‘Momma Bear’ immediately came toward the tree to join her baby bears. As they say, there’s nothing more dangerous than a mother protecting her young.
